Alejandro Tamayo is a seasoned multimedia journalist with extensive experience in both still photography and videography. Currently serving as the Lead Visual Journalist for The San Diego Union-Tribune, he covers stories on both sides of the border. Born and raised in San Diego, California, Tamayo initially pursued a career as a teacher at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. His journey later led him to the role of Technical Director at The San Diego Union-Tribune before transitioning into his current position as a photojournalist.
In his capacity as a photojournalist for The San Diego Union-Tribune, Tamayo ensures the timely completion of high-impact video stories. He creates news-style video segments/packages with a documentary-style. Formerly the director of Nuestra Voz Today show, a television program that covered news from the Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune and aired on Spectrum News1 LA.
Throughout his career, Tamayo has covered a wide range of stories, including the Migrant Caravan arriving in Tijuana, the Orlando Nightclub Shooting, and Haitians crossing into Tapachula, Mexico. Frequently called upon to handle both photo and video assignments with tight deadlines, he consistently delivers compelling work. In addition to his role at The San Diego Union-Tribune, Tamayo has contributed to Spectrum News1 LA and the Los Angeles Times as a documentarian for the Los Angeles Times Today Show.
Tamayo has received numerous awards for his work, including 10 Regional Emmy Awards, The Robert Spiers Benjamin Award for the best reporting in any medium on Latin America issued by Overseas Press Club of America, San Diego SPJ Awards for Best Video and News Video, and Los Angeles and San Diego Press Club First Place in Video awards. An adept educator, he enjoys sharing his knowledge and is fluent in Spanish.
